The State of South Dakota Department of Labor & Regulation – Boards and Commissions is hiring an Accountant to join their Pierre, SD team. A CPA licensure or formal degree is NOT required for this role.

About the role:

The Boards and Commissions oversees licensing and regulated occupations such as Electrical, Accounting, Plumbing and more. The Accountant will work with multiple software systems, process monthly statements, prepare reports, and work with a variety of Boards and Commissions staff to ensure license statements, payments, and systems are maintained.

This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Department of Labor and Regulation, Boards and Commissions. This position will work in a typical office environment. The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Preferred butnotrequired: A bachelor's degree in banking, finance, accounting, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience deemed acceptable by the hiring authority will also be considered. Experience with QuickBooks is highly preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • bookkeeping/accounting practices, Accounts Payable (A/P), and Accounts Receivable (A/R);
  • financial reporting work processes and preparing journal entries;
  • understand cash basis vs. accrual basis accounting;
  • generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); and
  • basic statistical measures.

Skill to:

  • utilize various Microsoft Excel tables (pivot, etc.) and software programs'
  • analyze data to detect errors and anomalies;
  • reconcile information from multiple sources and make corrections; and
  • build and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff members.

Ability to:

  • provide effective external and internal customer service;
  • interpret and comprehend program guidelines and procedures and communicate both effectively;
  • gather, interpret, report, and use information concerning assigned activities;
  • train and provide guidance to staff and service users;
  • compile complex financial records and prepare financial reports;
  • work independently and exercise judgment; and
  • manage and prioritize work.
